FUNCTION OF WORK:
To perform maintenance of fuel tanks, pumps, and related equipment at an airport.

LEVEL OF WORK:
Advanced

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
General from Airport Fuel Supervisor. Other reporting relationships may be approved by SCS.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
May provide guidance to lower-level personnel.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Airport Fuel Technician 2 by the presence of advanced-level fuel storage and maintenance duties.

Differs from Airport Fuel Supervisor by the absence of direct supervisory responsibilities.

At this level, performs the most complex maintenance and repair tasks for fuel storage tanks and related equipment.

Provides guidance to lower-level technicians on fuel storage and maintenance tasks; ensures safety protocols are followed and verifies results collected by lower-level technicians.

Performs daily sump tests on all fuel storage tanks and filter vessels.

Conducts Millipore testing on incoming fuel to ensure product cleanliness and compliance.

Collects samples to perform free water detection tests and API gravity checks to verify fuel specifications.

Accurately records API gravity results on check sheets and compares against standard requirements.

Replaces hoses, filters, grease pump bearings, and valves. Oversees repairs completed by lower-level technicians.

Conducts monthly manual tank gauging and submits readings for review.

Monitors sump levels of recovered fuel to prevent overflow or contamination.

Assesses recovered fuel quality and returns fuel to the receiving tank when it meets established standards.

Conducts inspections of petroleum retailers, wholesalers, and distributors at the airport to ensure compliance with fuel ratings, equipment usage, and processes in accordance with state and federal laws.

Serves as a project leader for airport fuel equipment maintenance projects. Coordinates with airport management and others as necessary to ensure projects are completed on schedule.

Troubleshoots, repairs, and overhauls complex fuel storage equipment.

Prepares inspection and testing reports in accordance with the standards and regulatory requirements of various federal, state, and local bodies.

Leads lower-level technicians during accidents, emergencies or fuel spills to ensure safety and compliance with response protocols.

Attaches and fits hoses and pumps for fueling aircrafts. Troubleshoots sizing for various types of aircrafts.

Leads lower-level technicians in a wide variety of ground handling and aircraft servicing tasks.

Attaches ground power units, troubleshoots connectivity issues, and ensures that aircrafts are receiving the appropriate voltage, frequency, and/or amperage.

Trains staff in aircraft towing and repositioning procedures.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of experience in aviation fuel operations, large-scale storage/distribution of flammable or toxic chemicals, industrial safety or compliance, environmental response, or refinery/terminal operations; OR

An associate's degree in one of the following fields: an environmental or fire science, industrial or occupational safety, industrial, petroleum or process technology, or aviation maintenance plus one year of experience in aviation fuel operations, large-scale storage/distribution of flammable or toxic chemicals, industrial safety or compliance, environmental response, or refinery/terminal operations; OR

Twelve semester hours in a petroleum or chemical engineering field.
