FUNCTION OF WORK:
To learn to perform complex investigations of arson and other associated crimes.

LEVEL OF WORK:
Entry

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Usually direct from a State Fire Marshal Lieutenant or State Fire Marshal Captain.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
None.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from a State Fire Marshal Arson Investigator 2 by the absence of experienced level duties.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
EXAMPLES BELOW ARE A BRIEF SAMPLE OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED.

Investigates arson crimes along with higher State Fire Marshal Arson Investigators.

Photographs scenes of suspected arson, collects and analyzes evidence, interviews witnesses, writes reports, determines origins of fire, and present evidence in court.

Attends schools and/or training programs in arson prevention and control to develop investigative abilities.

Assists other law enforcement agencies in investigations.

Prepares and submits daily biweekly and monthly reports, documents all case activities, and prepares other forms and reports as necessary.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of experience in law enforcement, investigatory work or military intelligence work; OR

Twelve semester hours of college training in a criminal justice field; OR

An associate's degree in a criminal justice field.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be eighteen years old at time of application.

An applicant will be disqualified if he or she has been convicted of a felony or if there are any indictments or bills of information pending against him or her in which felony charges are included; or if he or she has been convicted within the past three years of hit and run or driving while intoxicated.

May be required to possess a current Louisiana driver's license at the time of appointment.
