FUNCTION OF WORK:To perform inspections for state lands and water bottoms and/or assist professionals with land surveying activities.
LEVEL OF WORK:SUPERVISION RECEIVED:General from a professional land surveyor or engineer. Other reporting relationships may be approved by SCS.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:May provide guidance to lower-level personnel.
JOB DISTINCTIONS:Differs from Land Technician 2 by the presence of the full range of experienced-level tasks.
Differs from Land Technician 4 by the absence of responsibility for complex sub-professional tasks and/or lead worker responsibilities.

Serves as team member of a field crew engaged in land inspection and/or land surveying functions such as property boundary surveys, topographic surveys, elevation surveys, drainage, hydrographic, and GPS surveys.
Assists in the establishment and maintenance of property boundaries by performing mathematical computations, documenting measurements, taking photographs, etc.
Inspects public lands and water bottoms in order to ensure proper utilization, prevent unauthorized encroachment and possession, as well as to aid in the issuance of rights of way, permits, and leases. Reviews lease terms to ensure compliance.
Prepares detailed inspection reports with photographic and GPS documentation. Prepares other related documentation such as travel logs, vehicle logs, etc.
Operates vehicles, boats, and ATVs to accomplish tasks in the field. Ensures proper operation and maintenance of assigned movables.
Interacts with government officials and private property owners pertaining to public or private ownership of property, boundary issues, trespass complaints, or other matters.
Assists in determinations of state or private ownership of waterways by placing markers, operating vessels, etc. for depth studies.
Plots conventional surveys to include photo pass points to be used during rectification.
Operates the total station, prism pole data collector and other surveying-related equipment.
Assists with the field collection of bridge element inventory data collection.
Performs detailed streambed profile drawings from field notes. Assists in the profile survey data measurement.
Performs assigned field inspections and derives information for office analysis and design.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of experience in an environmental science, engineering or engineering technology, spatial and mapping technology, forestry, ecology, land surveying, land management, or operation and/or maintenance of mobile equipment; OR
Twelve semester hours in either architecture, cartography, construction, drafting, engineering, GIS, a physical science, or in an industrial or mathematics discipline.
