FUNCTION OF WORK:To serve as the commander and chief officer of the DPS Police by managing the operations of multiple sections of DPS Police.
LEVEL OF WORK:SUPERVISION RECEIVED:Administrative direction from an unclassified Deputy Superintendent or other higher-level personnel.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:Direct over DPS Police Captain and other lower-level DPS Police Officers.
LOCATION OF WORK:The Department of Public Safety and Corrections – Public Safety Services (DPS).
JOB DISTINCTIONS:Differs from DPS Police Captain by the presence of commanding multiple sections of DPS Police.

Plans, coordinates, manages, and directs operational and administrative activities of multiple sections of DPS Police.
Develops standards of performance for all DPS Police Officers.
Analyzes statewide DPS Police programs and establishes statewide procedures.
Collaborates with other law enforcement agencies and state officials.
Compiles and reviews various activity, performance, and criminal reports.
Inspects and oversees all DPS Police operational activities.
Assigns investigative and other duties concerning various criminal activities.
Informs and collaborates with LSP Administrators for the overall DPS Police operations within the state.
Performs in-house staff inspections of all organization management and activities of a section and provides information for comprehensive analysis of performance.
Reviews leave requests, overtime reports, expense account vouchers, outside employment requests and similar items pertaining to personnel.
Assists LSP Administrators in interpreting and integrating policy, plans and programs, new laws, executive orders, and other regulations affecting DPS.
Establishes staff and administrative priorities for allocation of assets, equipment, and other resources.
Guides the implementation of operational plans and procedures during special operations or emergency conditions.
Serves as the incident commander for operations involving several sections of DPS and LSP Personnel.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been in a position equivalent or higher in scope of responsibility to a DPS Police Captain in State service:
Eight years of experience as a DPS Police Officer.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must be at least 21 years of age.
Possession of a current driver's license.
Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.
An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified by the hiring agency until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.
