FUNCTION OF WORK:
To serve as the commander of a unit/section of DPS Police.

LEVEL OF WORK:
Manager

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
General from DPS Police Major or other higher-level law enforcement personnel.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Direct over DPS Police Lieutenants and other lower-level DPS Police Officers.

LOCATION OF WORK:
The Department of Public Safety and Corrections – Public Safety Services (DPS).

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from DPS Police Lieutenant by the presence of responsibility for the command of a section of DPS Police.

Differs from DPS Police Major by the absence of responsibility for the command of multiple sections of DPS Police.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Plans, directs, and manages personnel engaged in law enforcement related duties of public highways, state facilities, and other areas.

Manages, directs, coordinates, and implements the mission of the DPS Police.

Serves as liaison with executives of other local, state, and federal government agencies.

Performs in-house staff inspections of all organization management and activities of a section and provides information for comprehensive analysis of performance.

Reviews leave requests, overtime reports, expense account vouchers, outside employment requests and similar items pertaining to personnel.

Assists the Deputy Superintendent of LSP in interpreting and integrating policy, plans and programs, new laws, executive orders, and other regulations affecting the section.

Establishes staff and administrative priorities for allocation of assets, equipment, and other resources.

Provides assistance to federal and local law enforcement agencies.

Guides the implementation of operational plans and procedures during special operations or emergency conditions.

Serves as the incident commander for operations involving several sections of DPS and LSP Personnel.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been in a position equivalent or higher in scope of responsibility to a DPS Police Lieutenant in State service:

Six years of experience as a DPS Police Officer.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must be at least 21 years of age.

Possession of a current driver's license.

Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.

An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified by the hiring agency until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.
