FUNCTION OF WORK:To provide a full range of advanced-level law enforcement services as a field training officer, lead worker or special team coordinator in support of the DPS Police mission to protect life, enforce laws, serve the public, and conduct investigations for a specialized law enforcement unit.
LEVEL OF WORK:SUPERVISION RECEIVED:General from a DPS Police Sergeant or other higher-level law enforcement personnel.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:May exercise functional supervision over lower-level DPS Police Officers when operating as a Field Training Officer, lead worker or special team coordinator.
LOCATION OF WORK:The Department of Public Safety and Corrections – Public Safety Services (DPS).
JOB DISTINCTIONS:Differs from DPS Police Senior Officer by the presence of the ability to act as a Field Training Officer and by performing specialized enforcement tasks.
Differs from DPS Police Sergeant by the absence of direct supervision of lower-level DPS Police Officers.

Performs advanced level enforcement patrol related duties of public highways, state facilities, and other locations.
Serves as a Field Training Officer (FTO) on a regular basis.
Oversees law enforcement tasks performed by lower-level Police Officers.
May serve as the coordinator of a task force or special team.
Conducts law enforcement activities designed to protect life, enforce traffic and criminal laws, and to provide public safety services.
Investigates complex criminal violations through surveillance and undercover police work.
May identify, contact, and develop potential confidential informants.
Identifies and apprehends suspected violators.
Investigates complex crime scenes and vehicle crash scenes for the purpose of gathering physical evidence and witness testimony to be used in prosecuting suspects.
Secures areas impacted by natural/manmade disasters and civil disturbances.
Coordinates the removal of injured persons and vehicles involved in crashes or other incidents.
Completes documents related to enforcement activities such as reports of investigations, inspections, written warnings, citations, affidavits, warrants/ search warrants, property receipts/releases, and paperwork that may be required by other law enforcement agencies.
Inspects/investigates facilities to determine compliance with state laws and regulations, to maintain annual security assessments, and to improve public safety.
Appears as a witness in court.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Three years of experience as a DPS Police Officer as a POST-certified peace officer with the power of arrest.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
Five years of any law enforcement experience as a POST-certified peace officer with the powers of arrest.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must have attained twenty-first birthday at time of application.
Must possess a valid driver's license at time of appointment.
Active Police Officers Standard of Training (POST) certification.
An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified by the hiring agency until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.
Must complete Louisiana State Police annual in-service training.
Must complete Louisiana DPS Police Emergency Vehicle Operations Course.
Must complete Louisiana DPS Police advanced firearms qualification course.
