FUNCTION OF WORK:
To perform a variety of morgue-related laboratory duties and assist in the process of anatomical donors for use in medical training.

LEVEL OF WORK:
Experienced

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
General supervision from Morgue Supervisor or higher-level medical personnel.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
None.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Morgue Technician 1 by the presence of experienced responsibilities.

Differs from Morgue Technician 3 by the absence of advanced level and technical responsibilities.

Coordinates with the Louisiana Bureau of Anatomical Services directly on organization and needs for higher education institutions as it relates to cadaver use.

Maintains complete and accurate records of the body donations received, distributed, storage location, embalming dates, harvesting of research/teaching cadaveric specimens, utilization, cremation, and final disposition of all cadaveric specimens.

Performs routine capillary, venipuncture, and/or catheterization for testing or embalming purposes.

Performs routine blood sample collection and pathogen screening.

Prepares and transports cadavers for use at higher education facilities and affiliated institutions.

Embalms donor bodies and prepares donations to be used in various programs at higher education facilities and affiliated institutions.

Prepares and maintains the dissecting laboratories and donated bodies for classroom instruction.

Cremates bodies of donors and maintains crematory.

Prepares cremated ashes for return to the next of kin or for internment.

Disposes and manages hazardous chemicals related to the processing and embalming of cadavers.

Ensures that morgue, teaching laboratory spaces, and crematory are cleaned, sterilized, and stocked with adequate instruments and supplies.

May participate in the training of new and/or lower-level employees and students.

May participate in the training of students, faculty, and external participants in the processing of anatomical donors for use in medical training.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
One year of experience in the preparation and handling of cadavers; OR

Twelve semester hours in a biological, physical, chemical, or agricultural science; OR

Possession of associate’s degree in funeral services or mortuary science; OR

Certification as a Funeral Director.
