FUNCTION OF WORK:
To serve as a technical specialist in the maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of various devices and components for Intelligent Transportation Systems and other types of complex telecommunications systems.

LEVEL OF WORK:
Advanced

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Broad from an ITS Technician Supervisor or higher-level personnel.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Functional supervision over lower-level technicians.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from ITS Technician 3 by the presence of lead worker responsibilities as a primary duty and/or serving as technical specialist for a region.

Differs from ITS Technician Supervisor by the absence of direct supervisory responsibilities.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Serves as lead worker for regional Traffic Management Centers (TMCs).

Provides input to higher-level personnel concerning the scheduling and planning of crews and the assignment of individual project work.

Guides and trains lower-level technicians.

Ensures applications and devices adhere to federal, state and agency-specific standards and specifications.

Develops and maintains specifications for ITS and telecommunications technologies.

Troubleshoots, evaluates and analyzes network performance by compiling reports and reviewing system information; makes recommendations to improve system networks.

Evaluates and recommends technology.

Ensures system issues are resolved timely.

Leads the maintenance of traffic management system components such as electronic message boards, cameras, radar detectors, and device connectivity etc. on a regional basis.

Leads and oversees the installation and maintenance of telephones and telecommunication connectors on a regional basis.

Performs on-site inspections and recommends preventive maintenance strategies.

Leads and oversees data collection and analysis.

Provides technical assistance to users by troubleshooting and analyzing connectivity issues involving fiber optic cables and other components.

Makes recommendations for repairs, inclusive of cost estimates and the feasibility of repairing vs. replacing devices.

Provides technical assistance in the setup of conference calls, conferences and call center operations.

Serves as liaison between end-users, state agencies, and vendors. Coordinates repairs with vendors and end users; makes recommendations for approval.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Five years of experience or training in the maintenance and/or repair of electronic, electrical, or telecommunications devices, components, networks, or systems; OR

An associate’s degree in electrical technology or electronic systems plus three years of experience or training in the maintenance and/or repair of electronic, electrical, or telecommunications devices, components, networks, or systems.

EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university in electrical technology or electronic systems will be credited as one year of experience.
