FUNCTION OF WORK:
To provide supervision and technical guidance over a unit of geographic mapping personnel in support of a GIS program or project.

LEVEL OF WORK:
Supervisor

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Direct from a GIS Manager. May receive supervision from higher-level personnel.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Subordinate staff consists of GIS Analysts. May also supervise other personnel that assist the work unit.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from GIS Specialist by the presence of direct supervisory responsibilities.

Differs from GIS Manager by the absence of managerial responsibilities for a GIS program.

Provides supervision over a work unit that performs tasks related to GIS data collection, data analysis, and/or data modeling for GIS mapping services.

Supervises the use of complex GIS software and applications for data manipulation and development of product deliverables.

Plans and supervises the technical aspects of major GIS data and dissemination projects including the production of digital data in various formats on a variety of media and the use of various types of data sharing technologies.

Ensures functionality of the geographic information system, which may include GIS database acquisition and management, GIS computer system administration, GIS-related mathematical modeling, as well as planning and implementation of multi-agency GIS projects.

Serves as departmental liaison with technical representatives of federal, state and local agencies, the industry and the public in various aspects of GIS.

Supervises the acquisition, implementation, management, quality control and spatial analysis of all data collected, including spatial, non-spatial and LIDAR data.

Supervises GIS support services for scientific and technical mathematical modeling.

Supervises the development of map-based products and deliverables.

Recommends new GIS/remote sensing technology to management, and supervises implementation of approved technology.

Plans and supervises GIS/remote sensing training for GIS staff and agency personnel.

Supervises planning, development and implementation of GIS/remote sensing projects; may perform difficult GIS/remote sensing projects.

Supervises development of departmental technical standards in accordance with GIS industry best practices for data and project production to ensure GIS project quality is met.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Six years of experience in using geographic information systems (GIS), using digital mapping and/or surveying technology, or in aerial photography; OR

Twelve semester hours in a computer science, GIS, or geospatial field plus five years of experience in using geographic information systems, using digital mapping and/or surveying technology, or in aerial photography; OR

A bachelor’s degree with twelve semester hours in a computer science, GIS, or geospatial field plus four years of experience in using geographic information systems, using digital mapping and/or surveying technology, or in aerial photography.
