FUNCTION OF WORK:
To perform geographic mapping services in support of a GIS program or project.

LEVEL OF WORK:
Advanced

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Direct from a GIS Supervisor. May receive supervision from higher-level personnel.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
May provide functional supervision over GIS Analysts or other staff on a project basis.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from GIS Analyst 2 by the presence of advanced GIS analysis work.

Differs from GIS Specialist by the absence of serving as a technical specialist for a complex area of GIS and/or a broad range of programmatic GIS responsibilities.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Supports complex remote sensing/image processing projects using scanned aerial photography, satellite imagery, LIDAR, etc., to provide input data for GIS use.

Utilizes GIS software to perform complex modeling and data manipulation that may require qualitative or quantitative data analysis.

Creates, edits, and maintains geospatial data to be used by internal staff and external users and ensures published data is kept up-to-date.

Creates digital maps for use on agency or department websites. Develops and maintains GIS problem analysis and resolution techniques.

To perform geographic mapping services in support of a GIS program or project.

Coordinates quality control of data entry, metadata, and newly acquired GIS data sets including data classification appropriate shapefiles.

Coordinates GIS project planning meetings; plans and develops GIS and remote sensing projects including utilization of analytical techniques requiring technical and scientific knowledge.

Exercises project management responsibilities for GIS projects to assure quality and timeliness of deliverables; may lead a team of GIS personnel on a project basis to include data entry, metadata creation, and remote sensing project work.

May coordinate the use of filing conventions, libraries and standard database management procedures to ensure standardized GIS operation.

Works with other GIS personnel at federal, state, and local government agencies, as well as with representatives of the GIS industry and the public in order to accomplish GIS objectives.

Provides training in and operates a wide variety of computerized equipment, digitizers, plotters, printers, Global Positioning System (GPS) units, etc.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Four years of experience in using geographic information systems (GIS), using digital mapping and/or surveying technology, or in aerial photography; OR

Twelve semester hours in a computer science, GIS, or geospatial field plus three years of experience in using geographic information systems, using digital mapping and/or surveying technology, or in aerial photography; OR

A bachelor's degree with twelve semester hours in a computer science, GIS, or geospatial field plus two years of experience in using geographic information systems, using digital mapping and/or surveying technology, or in aerial photography.
