FUNCTION OF WORK:To apply codes, standards, laws, policies, and procedures relative to State Fire Marshal program areas and to conduct inspections.
LEVEL OF WORK:SUPERVISION RECEIVED:Usually direct from a State Fire Marshal Lieutenant or State Fire Marshal Captain.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:None, but may provide functional supervision over lower-level State Fire Marshal Deputies.
LOCATION OF WORK:Department of Public Safety, Office of State Fire Marshal.
JOB DISTINCTIONS:Differs from State Fire Marshal Deputy 1 by the presence of experienced level duties.
Differs from State Fire Marshal Senior Deputy by the absence of advanced level duties.

Conducts routine inspections and completes related reports.
Researches codes and data files for compliance.
Reads and interprets construction plans and manufacturers' specifications.
Conducts tests of various fire and safety systems; conducts evacuation drills.
Discusses corrective actions required for compliance with building owners, facility administrators, contractors, manufacturers, architects, etc.
Assists other law enforcement agencies in investigations and may provide testimony as necessary.
Trains and responds to man-made or natural disasters or emergencies including, but not limited to: fire, weather, search and rescue, medical, and hazardous material events.
Evaluates and inspects emergency shelters for occupancy.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Three years of experience in a criminal justice field, arson/criminal/fire investigations or inspections, a fire service field, building codes enforcement, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field; OR
An associate’s degree in any field plus two years of experience in a criminal justice field, arson/criminal/fire investigations or inspections, a fire service field, building codes enforcement, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field; OR
An associate’s degree in a criminal justice field, a fire service field, a construction field, architecture, or an engineering field plus one year of experience in a criminal justice field, arson/criminal/fire investigations or inspections, a fire service field, building codes enforcement, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field; OR
A bachelor’s degree in any field.
NOTE:
A certification in an approved area may be substituted for the education and/or experience requirements at the time of appointment (hire) or promotion.
