FUNCTION OF WORK:To learn codes, standards, laws, policies, and procedures relative to State Fire Marshal program areas and to become familiar with inspection practices.
LEVEL OF WORK:SUPERVISION RECEIVED:Usually direct from a State Fire Marshal Lieutenant or State Fire Marshal Captain.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:LOCATION OF WORK:Department of Public Safety, Office of State Fire Marshal.
JOB DISTINCTIONS:Differs from a State Fire Marshal Deputy 2 by the absence of experienced level duties.

Observes and practices inspection techniques under close supervision and completes basic inspection reports.
Researches codes and data files for compliance.
May read and interpret construction plans and manufacturers' specifications.
May test various fire and safety systems and conduct evacuation drills.
May discuss corrective actions required for compliance with building owners, facility administrators, contractors, manufacturers, architects, etc.
Attends schools and/or training programs to develop program area expertise and investigative abilities.
Assists other law enforcement agencies in investigations and may provide testimony as necessary.
Trains and responds to man-made or natural disasters or emergencies including, but not limited to: fire, weather, search and rescue, medical, and hazardous material events.
Assists in evaluating and inspecting emergency shelters for occupancy.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of experience in a criminal justice field, arson/criminal/fire investigations or inspections, a fire service field, building codes enforcement, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field; OR
An associate’s degree in any field plus one year of experience in a criminal justice field, arson/criminal/fire investigations or inspections, a fire service field, building codes enforcement, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field; OR
An associate’s degree in a criminal justice field, a fire science field, a construction field, architecture, or an engineering field; OR
A bachelor’s degree in any field.
NOTE:
A certification in an approved area may be substituted for the education and/or experience requirements at the time of appointment (hire) or promotion.
