FUNCTION OF WORK:
To perform a variety of diagnostic laboratory tests.

LEVEL OF WORK:
Advanced

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
General from higher level laboratory or Medical personnel.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
May serve as leadworker over lower level laboratory personnel.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from the Laboratory Technician 2 by presence of advanced level duties. Differs from the Laboratory Technician Supervisor by lack of direct supervision

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
EXAMPLES BELOW ARE A BRIEF SAMPLE OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED.

Collects blood specimens on those difficult-to-draw patients such as pediatric, spastic, and uncooperative patients requiring considerable explanation, discussion, and persuasion.

Isolates, types, and groups bacteria and fungi present in body fluids, exudates, transudates, and other specimens.

Performs chemical tests and analyses of body fluids and other material related to clinical medicine or research in the medical sciences.

Performs various hematological tests and examinations such as red cell counts, white blood cell counts, platelet counts, hemoglobin determinations, and packed cell volume determinations.

Performs such procedures as glucose tolerance tests involving calculations of glucose required, explanation of procedure to patient and persuasion if necessary, and responsibility of results upon completion.

Performs ABO, Rh, and routine screening.

Operates and performs maintenance on the tissue processor or cryostat in histology.

Performs cytological procedures.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of experience as a laboratory technician; OR

An associate or bachelor's degree in medical technology, nursing, clinical laboratory science, or a biological, physical, or chemical science plus one year of experience as a laboratory technician; OR

Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science plus one year of experience as a laboratory technician; OR

Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technologist by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Positions in Human Testing Laboratory environments must be licensed to practice as either a Laboratory Assistant or a Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Technician in the State of Louisiana as required by Louisiana Clinical Laboratory Personnel Law R.S. 37:1311-1329 and the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners.
