FUNCTION OF WORK:
To provide site interpretation to park visitors through guided tours, audio-visual presentations, living history demonstrations and other methods.

LEVEL OF WORK:
Advanced

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Broad from a Park Manager. Alternative reporting relationships may be approved by SCS.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
May provide direct or functional supervision over lower-level Interpretive Rangers, and/or other museum, visitor center or site personnel as conditions warrant.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Interpretive Ranger 2 by the presence of advanced interpretive duties.

Differs from Park Manager by the absence of responsibility for all operational aspects of the site.

Leads interpretive talks and tours to various groups on-site or off-site as required.

Utilizes information based on historical or scientific research to interpret the significance of the site.

Utilizes costumes, craft demonstrations, audio-visual presentations, or other methods to interpret important features and/or significance of the site.

Performs curatorial activities for a museum/visitor center.

Oversees an interpretive/educational program at a State Park, Historic Site, or Preservation Area.

Plans, constructs and displays interpretive exhibits, both in the museum/visitor center and on-site.

Schedules and conducts tours; develops oral presentations for such tours.

Selects and assigns tour guides and maintenance staff.

Develops and implements conservation and preservation plans of historical artifacts and buildings, and natural habitats.

Develops and implements Interpretive Site plans (Interpretive Prospectus) of Historic Sites, Recreation Sites, and Preservation Areas.

Maintains records, prepares reports, and composes correspondence regarding the museum/visitor center or historic preservation program.

Performs research to develop interpretive themes.

Performs accessing and cataloging activities of museum materials.

Catalogues site forms on historic buildings and places; checks and continually accessions additional site forms for inventory.

Develops projects to produce measured architectural drawings of landmark buildings; checks for quality and maintains archival collection.

Prepares and presents presentations and speeches at museum/visitor center to interested groups on and off-site.

Delivers basic and intermediate educational programs.

Studies and researches current information on cultural/wildlife topics and instructional techniques for use in lectures and programs.

Documents and maintains records of educational activities, materials and inventory items.

Assists with recruiting and training of a volunteer force to assist with education facilities and programs of the department.

Researches, develops and composes educational brochures and instructional activities.

Schedules, coordinates and presents special event programs.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Five years of experience in archaeological or anthropological work; or in conservation work or natural resource management; or in planning or presenting interpretive or educational programs relating to cultural or physical history or relating to the natural environment; OR

A bachelor's degree plus two years of experience in archaeological or anthropological work; or in conservation work or natural resource management; or in planning or presenting interpretive or educational programs relating to cultural or physical history or relating to the natural environment.
