FUNCTION OF WORK:
To provide direct-line supervision of subordinate social workers and/or other professional social services counselors for a service delivery program within a facility or region.

LEVEL OF WORK:
Supervisor

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Broad review from a higher-level social worker or facility administrator.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Direct-line over subordinate social workers and/or other professional social service counselors.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from lower-level social workers and the Social Worker 5-A by the presence of supervisory responsibilities.

Differs from the Social Worker 6-A by the absence of providing consultation on and coordination of complex program areas involving policy and procedure development for a region or at the headquarters office in order to assure the provision of quality services is in keeping with recognized standards for the protection of clients that are being served by contract programs.

Differs from Social Worker 6-B by the absence of administrative, programmatic, and managerial responsibilities including direct-line supervision of subordinate Social Worker 5-B.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Provides professional clinical supervision through review of cases to assist and guide subordinate social service staff in the use of social work methodologies and in developing skills in work with families, client groups, offenders, and especially with atypical and complex patients.

Determines work assignments, coordinates work flow and duty assignments, and evaluates work performance of subordinate social service staff.

Plans, organizes and implements various social work services. Coordinates the activities of the program with other units and agencies.

Develops goals, program plans, policies/procedures, determines staffing and resource needs for a social work unit.

Provides or arranges for training and development activities for subordinates.

May provide LCSW supervision to candidates for professional social work certification.

Provides expert testimony and advocacy representation on behalf of clients in court cases.

May provide limited direct casework services to a select group of highly complex cases.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice as a Licensed Master's Social Worker (LMSW) or a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) plus:

A master's degree in social work followed by four years of social services experience.
