FUNCTION OF WORK:
To investigate and analyze accidents or other incidents resulting in claims against the State and develop recommendations regarding the settlement of claims.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from the State Risk Adjuster 1 by the assignment of more complex claims and claims that are in litigation.

Differs from the State Risk Adjuster 3 by the absence of responsibility for performing the full range of adjusting tasks and by a lower claim payment authority limit.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Participates in investigations of accidents and/or incidents that may expose the agency to a risk of loss.

Takes recorded statements or causes depositions to be taken from all parties involved in a claim; gathers physical evidence from the scene.

Consults with claimants and/or their attorneys concerning the possibilities of settlement of the claim, with the advice and consent of higher level insurance claims adjusters. Attends and participates in mediations toward resolution of disputed issues and/or settlement of claim. Attends trials and testifies as needed.

Prepares evidence for trial in court through cooperation with the agency's legal counsel.

Maintains contact with injured employees and physicians involved in workers' compensation cases.

Performs preliminary investigations of workers' compensation claims to determine State's liability.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Four years of experience in insurance claims adjusting, examining, or investigation; accident investigation, legal research, project management, contract management, or construction management; OR

Six years of full-time work experience in any field plus one year of experience in insurance claims adjusting, examining, or investigation; accident investigation, legal research, project management, contract management, or construction management; OR

A bachelor's degree plus one year of experience in insurance claims adjusting, examining, or investigation; accident investigation, legal research, project management, contract management, or construction management; OR

An advanced degree in risk management or insurance, business or public administration, safety or legal studies, construction management, or a health services field.

EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field. The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field.
