FUNCTION OF WORK:
To serve as a public health Sanitarian responsible for the administration of multiple public health and environmental consumer protection programs for several functional units in a regional office.

LEVEL OF WORK:
Administrator

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Administrative direction from a higher-level public health official.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Direct line over Sanitarian 5's and lower level Sanitarians.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Sanitarian 5 by responsibility for the administration of multiple public health and environmental consumer protection programs for several functional units in a regional office.

Differs from Sanitarian 7 by the absence of statewide responsibility for multiple public health and environmental consumer protection programs.

Administers all phases of management, development, and enforcement of multiple public health and environmental consumer protection programs of several functional units in a geographical area.

Represents the Department at meetings, citizens groups, educational forums, and the regulated community regarding permit applications, variances and complex environmental issues.

Assures consistent application of the Louisiana State Sanitary Code by directing subordinate staff in the performance of comprehensive inspections involving the observation, assessment, and proper documentation of health hazards and violations.

Negotiates and manages compliance agreements with violators of the Louisiana State Sanitary Code.

Manages the preparation of enforcement documents.

Establishes Standard Operating Procedures in order to assure the most efficient, effective, and professional delivery of services and benefits to the public consistent with goals and objectives of the Sanitarian Services Section.

Answers correspondence, writes reports, prepares memos and responds to telephone inquiries within a region, related to multiple public health and environmental consumer protection and program policies, regulations, and staff activities, renders interpretations of the State Sanitary Code.

Supervises the implementation of quality control and quality assurance procedures.

Conducts interviews to fill professional level vacancies within the Department.

Responsible for personnel management and development; performs training activities as needed.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a current Louisiana Sanitarian's license plus one of the following, which must include one year of experience at the supervisory level or above:

Five years of experience as a sanitarian; OR

A master's degree in public health, food science, dairy science, environmental or sanitary science, or one of the physical or biological sciences plus four years of experience as a sanitarian.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in the Molluscan Shellfish program require that applicants complete the Louisiana Boating Education program and be certified by the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
