FUNCTION OF WORK:
To supervise the work of a staff of engineering technicians or related positions engaged in a wide variety of sub professional engineering duties.

LEVEL OF WORK:
Supervisor

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Broad from an Engineering Technician 7 (except at DOTD), Engineer 5, Engineer 5-DOTD, or comparable level professional manager.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Direct line over Engineering Technicians or equivalent level positions. Or direct over multiple Parish Highway Maintenance Superintendents, Highway Foremen, or comparable supervisory maintenance personnel.

LOCATION OF WORK:
Statewide. May be used by any state agency except DOTD.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from professional engineers by the absence of professional engineering assignments and by lack of a professional engineering license

Differs from Engineering Technician 5 by presence of regular and recurring direct line supervisory duties. The nature of managerial tasks, complexity, and diversity of duties as well as the reporting relationship will also be considered.

Differs from Engineering Technician 7 by the size of assigned staff.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Determines priorities and supervises the work of a small to moderate size staff of engineering technicians or supervisory maintenance personnel.

Approves leave; prepares and conducts employee performance appraisals; interviews applicants; maintains employee records; and makes recommendations for promotions, reallocations, merit increases, and other personnel actions to supervisor.

Resolves conflicts among employees; recommends disciplinary actions when necessary.

Maintains familiarity and ensures unit's compliance with agency procedures on purchasing, budget, accounting, contracts, etc.

Assists engineering managers by recommending revisions to policies and procedures that will result in improved operations.

Responsible for accomplishment of goals and objectives assigned to unit(s) supervised; scheduling and coordinating work schedules; monitoring productivity of staff members, etc.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a high school diploma or GED plus four years of sub-professional engineering experience.

SUBSTITUTIONS:
Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance will substitute for the high school diploma or GED.

College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience provided that six semester hours of each thirty are in one of these specialized fields: architecture, cartography, chemistry, construction management, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics, engineering technology, geography, geology, industrial technology, landscape architecture, math, or physics. All specialized course work credited must be in the same specialized field. A combination of course work from different fields will not be accepted.

Full time training in sub-professional engineering from a trade school or technical institute will substitute for the required experience on a month for month basis for a maximum of one year of experience.

Completion of a two year course of study in a sub-professional engineering curriculum from a trade school or technical institute will substitute for two years of the required experience.

A baccalaureate degree in engineering, engineering technology, construction management or construction technology will substitute for all of the required experience.

Possession of an engineer intern certificate will substitute for all of the required experience.
