FUNCTION OF WORK:
To provide practical application of land surveying theory and skills to a variety of field or office tasks involving standard procedures and practices.

LEVEL OF WORK:
Advanced

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
General from a Surveyor Supervisor or higher-level Engineer. May also receive functional supervision from a Surveyor 5 in the field. Alternative reporting relationships may be approved by SCS.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Functional supervision may be exercised over Engineering Technicians or other personnel engaged in survey work.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Surveyor 3 by the presence of full independence when performing work of a greater size and scope.

Differs from Surveyor 5 by the absence of responsibility for serving as a lead over a survey crew on a regular basis or as a lead over contracted surveyors.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

May supervise a team of employees engaged in location, property, geodetic, and hydrographic surveys.

Contacts property owners to obtain permission to enter private property.

Reviews survey data obtained by survey party crews including the computing, plotting, and survey map preparation.

Performs the mathematical computations necessary to complete the survey.

Researches records in courthouses, land offices and other locations where maps and ownership records are stored in order to determine inconsistencies, errors and omissions in deeds, abstracts, maps, and surveys.

Acts as an expert witness in court suits involving matters pertaining to land boundaries.

Writes legal descriptions of land areas shown on completed survey maps.

Receives job assignments, researches and reconnoiters project site, and determines best methods to conduct survey.

Reviews, approves, signs, and affixes seal to right-of-way maps prepared by survey party crews, causing them to become legal documents.

Reviews the mathematical computations of engineering technicians and others engaged in survey work.

May supervise subprofessionals in the analyzing of title abstracts, computations, and preparation of right-of-way and special maps on a project-by-project basis.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional land surveying plus one of the following:

One year of licensed land surveying experience; OR

Five years of professional land surveying experience.

NOTE:
Surveying experience gained while licensed as a professional land surveyor will be accepted as licensed land surveying experience.

Surveying experience gained after earning a bachelor's degree and 30 semester hours in land surveying, mapping, and real property courses and prior to earning a Professional Land Surveyor license (e.g., as a Surveyor Intern or equivalent) will be accepted as professional-level surveying experience.
