FUNCTION OF WORK:
To conduct environmental health science activities, such as inspections, investigations, quality assurance, quality control, and environmental health risk assessment, related to collecting, analyzing and interpreting chemical, physical, biological, demographic, and other data about toxic environmental contamination, hazardous substance emergency events or environmental regulatory standards in order to protect the health and safety of Louisiana residents by recommending public health actions to the Assistant Secretary, State Health Officer, and environmental regulatory agencies.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
General supervision from an Environmental Health Scientist Supervisor.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
None.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Environmental Health Scientist 1 by the responsibility for independent performance of basic level scientific projects.

Differs from Environmental Health Scientist Coordinator by lack of lead worker responsibilities and the level of supervision received. Also lacks responsibility for projects of a larger scope.

Reviews scientific literature.

Participates as a technical advisor in community meetings relating to environmental health science activities.

Assists in designing computer programs for report generation.

Assists in the development and design of databases.

Enters, evaluates and analyzes data using statistical computer programs.

Works with data sources to ensure complete and accurate data reports.

Collects and compiles and manages health data, such as demographics and multi-media contaminants, from state and federal agency officials for environmental health science investigations.

Participates in the scheduling and planning of environmental health science investigations or special studies.

Assists in producing environmental health science reports.

Serves as a resource to the general public by responding to routine requests for information about toxic chemicals.

Assists in the preparation of state and federal grant proposals to fund environmental health science activities.

Discusses and assists in resolving environmental health science issues with community leaders, health professionals and officials, lawyers, legislators, and peers.

Conducts independent inspections and complaint investigations.

Recommends public health actions based on technical assessments.

Participates in emergency response activities.

Provides technical testimony at hearings and other proceedings.

Conducts quality assurance audits of data, records, and other information to determine accuracy, completeness and proper documentation.

Evaluates, interprets and reports data from analyses or inspections performed.

Assists in the planning and coordinating of environmental health science services in health emergencies (e.g. chemical spills, industrial explosions, hurricanes, natural disasters, disease outbreaks, etc.) as needed to insure and maintain community public health or when requested to do so by the Governor.

Performs related work as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A bachelor's degree in one of the following fields: public health, biological sciences, physical sciences, earth sciences, environmental sciences, engineering or a related field plus one year of experience in environmental health science or environmental science; OR

A master's degree or Ph.D. in public health, biological sciences, physical sciences, earth sciences, environmental sciences, engineering or a related field.
