FUNCTION OF WORK:To train in conducting environmental health science activities, such as inspections, investigations, quality assurance, quality control and environmental health risk assessments, related to collecting, analyzing and interpreting chemical, physical, biological, demographic, and other data about toxic environmental contamination, hazardous substance emergency events or environmental regulatory standards in order to protect the health and safety of Louisiana residents by recommending public health actions to the Assistant Secretary, State Health Officer, and environmental regulatory agencies.
LEVEL OF WORK:SUPERVISION RECEIVED:Close supervision from an Environmental Health Scientist Supervisor.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:JOB DISTINCTIONS:Differs from Environmental Health Scientist 2 by the absence of independent responsibility for basic level scientific projects.

Under close supervision, is instructed and trained to carry out the duties of the Environmental Health Scientist 2.
As a trainee, learns the following duties:
Assists in designing computer programs for report generation.
Assists in the development and design of databases.
Enters and evaluates data using statistical computer programs.
Works with data sources to ensure complete and accurate data reports.
Collects and compiles health data, such as; demographics and multi-media contaminants, from state and federal agency officials for environmental health science investigations.
Participates in the scheduling and planning of environmental health science investigations.
Assists in producing environmental health science reports.
Serves as a resource to the general public by responding to routine requests for information about toxic chemicals.
Reviews scientific literature.
Assists in routine inspection and complaint investigations.
Participates in emergency response activities.
Assists in the operations of environmental monitoring equipment and collection of monitoring data.
Assists in the planning and coordinating of environmental health science services in health emergencies (e.g. chemical spills, industrial explosions, hurricanes, natural disasters, disease outbreaks, etc.) as needed to insure and maintain community public health or when requested to do so by the Governor.
Performs related work as assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A bachelor's degree in one of the following fields: public health, biological sciences, physical sciences, earth sciences, environmental sciences, engineering or a related field.
