FUNCTION OF WORK:To issue oversize/overweight permits by ensuring compliance with DOTD policies and procedures and Louisiana and Federal laws by utilizing a multifaceted, state-of-the-art, complex, interactive computer permitting, routing, and bridge analysis program for the purpose of issuing permits for the statewide travel of oversize and overweight vehicles.
LEVEL OF WORK:SUPERVISION RECEIVED:Close from Transportation Permits Supervisor 1; occasional from a Transportation Permits Specialist 3.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:JOB DISTINCTIONS:Differs from Transportation Permits Specialist 2 by the by the absence of responsibility for performing the full range of program assignments.

Operates a multi-faceted, state-of-the-art, complex, interactive, computer permitting, routing, and bridge analysis program for the purpose of issuing permits for oversize and overweight truckloads statewide.
Processes permits on-line for oversize/overweight trucks and loads, including the identification of the proper application of one or more of 28 different types of permits to meet the customers needs for any given movement.
Acts as primary point of contact between agency and public for most permit needs.
Gives prompt, courteous and helpful service to the inquiring public.
Communicates via telephone with permit customers.
May research files for account information and permits issued.
Presents requests for permit changes to Transportation Permits Supervisors.
Takes permits manually, which includes the calculation of permit fees.
Makes basic decisions concerning the issuance of permits and the proper handling of situations related to the movement of permit loads.
Masters the location and special conditions, including many overpass clearances and posted bridges, of permit routes statewide for the purpose of expediting the time-critical permitting process, providing for the safe transport of millions of dollars worth of commodities, and protecting health and lives of Louisiana's motoring public.
Maintains updated information records relative to the issuance of oversize/overweight permits such as rules and regulations, road construction information, certain bridge clearances and weight restrictions, and notices of any other special conditions pertaining to permit issuance.
Communicates extensively by phone with trucking company, governmental, and industry representatives regarding the issuance of permits.
Receives telephone applications and mailed in applications for special permits and carefully checks the application for accuracy to determine the needs to ensure the proper permit is issued; records and checks information carefully to ensure prompt and efficient delivery to customer.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
One year of experience in administrative services, engineering, or transportation permit processing.
EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will substitute for one year of the required experience.
