FUNCTION OF WORK:
To pilot aircraft to transport cargo and/or passengers or to perform agency program related aerial activities.

LEVEL OF WORK:
Experienced

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
General from a higher ranking pilot or other agency supervisors.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
May exercise functional supervision over agency program personnel; may assist in providing on-the-job training to entry level pilots.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Aircraft Pilot 1 by responsibility for independent performance of agency aerial program activities.

Differs from Aircraft Chief Pilot by lack of responsibility for administering the aviation program for an agency with less than five aircraft or lack of responsibility for directing regional flight operations for four or more aircraft within an agency-wide air fleet.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
EXAMPLES BELOW ARE A BRIEF SAMPLE OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED.

Performs all flight duties of Aircraft Pilot 1.

Pilots single or small multiple engine aircraft under visual and instrument flight rules.

Performs program related activities in addition to pilot duties. These may include (but are not limited to) the following types of duties:

Conducts coastal shrimp monitoring and patrol, and patrol of shellfish sanitation closed areas.

Conducts periodic waterfowl survey of breeding grounds.

May conduct cooperative search and rescue missions with U.S. Coast Guard and Civil Air Patrol.

Coordinates agency enforcement activities with field employees.

Performs aerial detection of forest fires; estimates fire severity and determines which fires require priority handling.

Using appropriate aerial photographs, topographic and parish maps, locates fires or areas of insect infestation and directs ground crews to appropriate location.

Observes and positions ground crews at the best and safest location to fight fires.

Observes and detects changes in coloration of trees and determines areas of disease, insect or storm damage.

Provides aerial assistance in surveys and/or investigations of arson, timber and cattle theft, natural disasters, hazardous materials spills, coastal permit evaluations, pipeline surveillance and others.

Monitors agricultural aerial applicators and reports/documents violations of current state or federal laws.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) first-class or second-class medical certificate and either of the following:

1. A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Commercial Pilot license with instrument rating with 750 hours of recorded flight time.

2. A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to check out on the model and types of aircraft to be flown.

Possession of appropriate ratings, waivers and/or certificates that may be required by the position to which the appointment is being made.
