FUNCTION OF WORK:To assume programmatic responsibility for a disease prevention and intervention activity military base, in a correctional facility or in the HIV/AIDS program or serve as lead-worker over several lower level Disease Intervention Specialists.
LEVEL OF WORK:SUPERVISION RECEIVED:Broad review from a Disease Intervention Specialist 4, Specialist 5 or Regional Administrator/Medical Director.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:May serve as lead-worker over lower-level Disease Intervention Specialists.
JOB DISTINCTIONS:Differs from Disease Intervention Specialist 2 by the presence of one of the following:
a. Responsibility for coordinating a disease intervention and prevention program on a military base, in a correctional facility or for the HIV/AIDS program for within a region.
b. Leader-worker over other Disease Intervention Specialists.
Differs from Disease Intervention Specialist Supervisor 1 and 2 by absence of direct line supervisory responsibility.
Differs form Intervention Specialist 4 by the absence of direct-line supervisory responsibility.

Participates in the setting of disease intervention and prevention objectives and assumes responsibility for attainment.
Coordinates and reviews disease intervention and prevention program activities in area of responsibility.
Plans and directs efforts to persuade physicians, laboratories, hospitals, nursing homes, prisons, homeless shelters, and clinics to participate in disease surveillance and practice effective disease intervention techniques.
Calls on local, state, and federal officials (e.g. penal, medical and military directors); civic groups; and private organizations in order to solicit cooperation for disease intervention and prevention activities.
Monitors, evaluates and makes recommendations for the improvement of regional/parish program activities, such as STD, HIV/AIDS or tuberculosis.
Trains new and subordinate staff members and/or private health care providers.
Provides technical information and instruction to other public health personnel regarding disease intervention and prevention.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Five years of experience in disease investigation and prevention activities; OR
Three years of experience in investigatory work, social services, nursing, or as a medical laboratory technician or assistant plus two years of experience in disease investigation and prevention activities; OR
A bachelor's degree plus two years of experience in disease investigation and prevention activities; OR
An advanced degree in epidemiology, public health, in a biological science, or nursing plus one year of experience in disease investigation and prevention activities.
