FUNCTION OF WORK:
To train in monitoring, analyzing, and interpreting epidemiological data in order to help assure the health and safety of Louisiana citizens.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Close supervision from a higher-level Public Health or other Louisiana Department of Health staff member.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
None.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Public Health Epidemiologist Technician 2 by functioning in a training capacity with the absence of independent responsibility.

Differs from Public Health Epidemiologist by the absence of independence in conducting epidemiological activities and the absence of independence in using technical tools of epidemiology, such as; study design and statistics.

Under close supervision, is instructed and trained to carry out the duties of the Public Health Epidemiology Technician 2.

As a trainee, learns the following duties:

Assists in designing computer programs for report generation.

Assists in the development and design of databases.

Evaluates data using statistical computer programs.

Conducts passive disease surveillance by monitoring hospital activity through Web-based reporting systems.

Collects and compiles health data, such as; demographics and contaminants from state and federal health agency officials, for epidemiological investigations.

Assists in producing epidemiological reports.

Serves as a resource to the general public by responding to routine requests for information.

Assists in the planning and coordinating of epidemiological services in health emergencies (e.g. chemical spills, industrial explosions, hurricanes, natural disasters, disease and injury outbreaks, etc.) as needed to insure and maintain community public health or when requested to do so by the Governor.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Three years of experience in epidemiology, healthcare analytics and reporting, health equity, nursing or public health; OR

A bachelor’s degree in public health, epidemiology, biological sciences, behavioral sciences, health sciences or nursing.
