FUNCTION OF WORK:
To perform specialized work aboard the state's sole owned dredge and associated support equipment.

Close from Dredge Captain, Dredge Mate or Marine Operators.

None.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from other laborer jobs by the presence of duties involving marine dredging. Works on dredging equipment which may be in operation 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

Differs from Dredge Mate by the absence of experienced-level maintenance on dredge equipment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Fastens hawsers and mooring lines to vessels, wharves, barges, piers, or pilings and checks towing rigging, lines, wires, etc. Coils rope, splices rope, and makes rope fenders. Makes eyes in cable.

Lowers and raises anchors by hand or by vessel's winches.

Performs routine maintenance such as cleaning, chipping, scraping, painting, changing oil and filters, polishing bright work, etc. The use of steam cleaning equipment, paint sprayer, blasting equipment, and various industrial power tools is required to perform varied functions of maintenance.

Loads and unloads material and equipment for use on vessels.

Moves swing wires.

Operates bilge pumps.

Assists in deck and equipment repairs.

Assists in handling, hook-up, and securing of discharge lines and dredge anchors.

Assist in monitoring the condition of wire cables, winches, pulleys, blocks, pipeline, barges, and mooring parts.

Assists in operating anchor winch.

Participates in changing and greasing cables and sheaves when required.

Cleans obstructions from the cutter head, suction tube, and pump.

Uses acetylene torch to clear cutter head.

Assists welders as required.

Performs maintenance on pontoon line such as protective coatings, changing of walkway boards, replacing of gaskets, and cleaning/greasing of all ball joint connections.

Assists with fueling of tugs and dredge.

Handles lines in recovery of vessels adrift.

Mans and operates emergency safety equipment such as firefighting hoses, fire extinguishers, rescue boats, life rings, floats, etc.

Serves as lookout to assist in safe navigation of vessel.

Works in all weather conditions as required.
