FUNCTION OF WORK:
To administer a large tree maintenance/management program located on a university campus.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
General from an unclassified Campus Grounds Manager or Grounds Superintendent.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Lead-worker over Tree Trimmers, Students, etc. on an assignment basis.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Tree Surgeon by responsibility for overseeing a large tree maintenance program.

Differs from Horticulturist by lack of professional level Horticulturist work.

Manages a tree replacement nursery/holding area.

Assists in the development of a tree master plan to include individual tree numbering and identification, status, work history, and future scheduling of work.

Maintains accurate and updated records of tree inventory status.

Identifies problems such as damaged, diseased, and stressed trees and formulates corrective measures to address such problems.

Oversees the installation of new trees, relocation and removal of existing trees, and all maintenance activities by coordinating with the campus Landscape Architect.

Plans and oversees annual or seasonal programs such as pruning, fertilization, aeration, etc..

Oversees special tree maintenance projects such as barriers, chemical application, ground covers, aeration, injection, or other procedures recommended by the LSU Tree Advisory Committee.

Identifies serious or unusual tree disorders and makes recommendations to the LSU Tree Advisory Committee.

Oversees all tree maintenance activities performed by both LSU personnel as well as outside contractors and maintains accurate records.

Coordinates with area supervisors on tree work required in specific areas.

Implements a repair/preventive maintenance program on all tree equipment and recommends replacement as necessary.

Prepares reports as require by departmental managers with respect to trees, subordinate personnel, equipment, costs estimates, etc..

Provides technical expertise and practical experience, through the LSU Forestry Department, for students enrolled in the Urban Forestry program.

Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a current Louisiana Arborist license issued by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry plus two years of experience in the upkeep of trees and shrubs; OR

Six semester hours in horticulture, forestry, turf management, landscape management, or in tree surgery.
