FUNCTION OF WORK:
To supervise the Louisiana State Museum's Historical Center, to conduct detailed and complex historical research for museum programs, to tell the story of each museum artifact,
to review all museum interpretive programs for accurate historical content and interpretation according to the latest published scholarly research and historiography, and to verify
through primary and secondary research the authenticity and relevance of proposed acquisitions to the collections of the Louisiana State Museum.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Broad review from the Assistant Secretary or Museum Curatorial Services Director.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
May supervise Librarians, project basis over Curators and volunteers.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Museum Curators 3 and Museum Special Projects Coordinator by the presence of advanced level of historical conception and interpretive research,
analysis and editing required.

Differs from Museum Division Director by the absence of responsibility for directing the ongoing programs and collections of a major division in the state museum except for
special programs directly related to the Historical Center, and for archival and manuscript collections.

Conducts detailed historical research in all kinds of primary and secondary historical sources to discover, analyze and interpret the relationship of all museum collections to the
history of Louisiana, the South and the nation.

Reviews all museum interpretive programs according to the latest published scholarly research and historiography.

Composes and edits historical publications, such as monographs, exhibition catalogues, exhibition specific books, and collections of essays.

Advises Accessions Committee and Assistant Secretary of historical value of proposed acquisitions, whether gifts or purchases, for museum collections by verifying
through intensive primary and secondary research their authenticity and relevance to the mission of the Louisiana State Museum.

Plans for expansion of archival and manuscript materials to the Historical Center's collections and directs arrangements for such expansion.

Advises Programs Committee and Assistant Secretary of historical accuracy of proposed material to be presented to the public through museum programs.

Confers with media regarding activities of Historical Center.

Presents lectures and attends special events and conferences to promote activities of the Historical Center. Presents historical training to local tour guides.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A master's degree in American history or American studies plus two years of experience as a historian in collegiate-level teaching, a historical museum, or with a historical society; OR

A doctorate degree in American history or American studies plus one year of experience as a historian in collegiate-level teaching, a historical museum, or with a historical society.
