FUNCTION OF WORK:
To assess insurance needs of participating agencies, recommending type and level of coverage and obtaining commercial coverage as necessary.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from the State Risk Underwriter 2 by the absence of responsibility for performing the full range of under writing tasks.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Performs all tasks in a training capacity.

Underwrites multi-line property and casualty self insurance policies by assessing insurance risk data to identify types and levels of insurance required to cover agencies damages and losses, determining risks' potential financial impact on Louisiana and recommending self-insurance where feasible and commercial coverage in high risk cases, and issuing the states' self-insurance policies, endorsements and other documents to user agencies.

Contacts representative of user agencies and private insurance carriers to discuss limited lines of property and casualty insurance policy, issuance of renewal, premium billings, and related matters.

Prepares requisitions and specifications for the purchase of commercial property and casualty insurance policies and bonds, and requests co-insurance, riders, endorsements and other non-standard policy provisions in accordance with administrative directives and state laws, rules and regulations.

Determines annual premium payments to be charged to each state agency in order to meet the multi-line property and casualty self-insurance programs' budgetary and claim payment needs.

Maintains statistical records on premium payments on each type of property and casualty insurance for each state agency so that annual projections of premium costs can be made.

Reviews less complex contracts and provides recommendations with regard to the insurance requirements and hold-harmless agreements.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Three years of experience in insurance underwriting or claims processing, insurance administration, policy development, finance or financial auditing, statistical analysis, risk management, risk analysis, insurance marketing, or loss prevention; OR

Six years of full-time work experience in any field; OR

A bachelor's degree.

EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field. The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field.
