FUNCTION OF WORK:
To propagate plants, record data, arrange plant displays, prepare and apply pesticides, prepare classroom materials, and supervise student assistants. To perform work of a skilled nature to maintain grounds around state buildings and institutions.

LEVEL OF WORK:
Experienced

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Direct from Horticultural Attendant Foreman, Horticulturist, or other higher level supervisor.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
May exercise functional supervision over student workers, laborers, inmates, and patients.

LOCATION OF WORK:
May be used by all state agencies.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Horticultural Attendant Leader by absence of regular leadworker responsibilities.

Differs from Tree Specialist by absence of responsibility for trimming trees at considerable heights.

Performs diversified and skilled work in care of plants, vegetation, trees, and grounds of an agency.

Prunes and trims trees and shrubs as needed or on a seasonal basis.

Performs any related duties necessary for the growth and appearance of trees, plants, and vegetation.

Propagates, cultivates, fertilizes, disbuds, and schedules foliage, vegetable, horticultural, florist, and woody ornamental crops.

Monitors and adjusts environmental control system for plant structures.

Monitors pest activity; schedules, prepares, and applies pesticides, and calibrates pesticide applicators.

Records data on crop development, yields, and environment.

Gives direction to student workers; checks quality and quantity of student work.

Schedules, selects, prepares, delivers, and arranges plant material for university functions.

Prepares materials and aids in supervision of student laboratory exercises.

Maintains inventory of supplies and tools, including preparing material orders.

Operates and maintains, through minor repairs, common horticultural machines and irrigation systems.

Assists Horticulturist in greenhouse and small nursery management.

Grows and maintains houseplants for use in state offices.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
One year of experience in any of the following: farming, the care and maintenance of trees and shrubs, or groundskeeping.

SUBSTITUTIONS:
College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience provided that six semester hours of each thirty is in any of the following fields: botany, agriculture, horticulture, floriculture, agronomy, forestry, turf management, landscape management or landscape architecture.

Vocational training in the care and maintenance of trees and shrubs will substitute for the required experience on a month for month basis. NOTE:
Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.
