FUNCTION OF WORK:To conduct inspections of products, facilities, commodities, measuring devices, and/or livestock to ensure compliance with laws and regulations.
LEVEL OF WORK:SUPERVISION RECEIVED:Close from an Agriculture Specialist District Supervisor. Other reporting relationships may be approved by SCS.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:JOB DISTINCTIONS:Differs from Agriculture Specialist 2 by the absence of experienced-level tasks.

Incumbents at this level learn to perform basic tasks related to regulatory compliance for an agricultural program area such as grain/feed, meat/poultry, eggs, seafood, dairy, fruits/vegetables, weights/measures, veterinary health, food storage, food distribution, etc.
Trains in the performance of sampling and inspection as applicable to the assigned program.
Conducts basic inspections of processing and storage facilities for proper certification of equipment, sanitary conditions, adequacy of records, etc.
Obtains and tests samples under close supervision.
Verifies that products are produced and labeled in accordance with applicable regulations and laws by following documented procedures under close supervision.
Affixes legends to products.
Trains for USDA license or other certification as applicable to the assigned program.
Learns procedures necessary to test, inspect, and calibrate commercially used devices.
Reviews product labeling and markings to ensure accurate descriptions are reflected.
Prepares samples to be forwarded to the laboratory for further testing.
Checks for contamination, inventory, records, etc. as applicable to the program.
Places seals or placards to indicate failed inspections.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Three years of experience in one or a combination of the following:
1. Administrative services
2. Inspecting or enforcing compliance with agricultural laws, rules, or regulations
3. Inspection and testing of weighing and measuring devices
OR
A bachelor’s degree in forestry, an agricultural, biological, chemical, environmental, health, or physical science, or an information technology, mathematics, or business field.
