FUNCTION OF WORK:
To ensure that management of employees, security and therapeutic intervention is accomplished in accordance with overall goals, policies, and procedures of the facility.

LEVEL OF WORK:
Supervisor

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
General from the Corrections Major--Therapeutic or other higher level official.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Typically direct over the Corrections Lieutenant--Therapeutic.

LOCATION OF WORK:
24-hour secure facilities housing judicially remanded clients.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Corrections Lieutenant--Therapeutic in that supervisory functions are not limited to a ward of a particular unit.

Differs from Corrections Major--Therapeutic by lack of supervisory responsibility for multiple teams and units.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Supervises and directs a team in the provision of a secure environment.

Maintains locked doors and gates as per facility policy.

Follows facility policies in control and prevention of contraband on grounds (this includes clients, employees and visitors).

Monitors client movement and provides client count as per facility policy.

Makes security checks of buildings, grounds, fences, doors and gates to ensure that the integrity of security is intact; refers problems and/or deficiencies to proper authority.

Follows procedure for searching client, living quarters, etc. to control contraband and avoid litigation.

Maintains security and follows instructions in handling emergency situations such as riots, fire, etc.; maintains a level of functioning which does not induce panic among clients or employees.

Institutes security measures when escorting clients inside and outside facility.

Provides twenty-four hour security when clients are transferred to off-campus medical facilities.

Responds to orders to report to duty during elopement (or other unusual occurrences) and mans duty stations as assigned.

Supervises security of those clients assigned to his/her area and contributes toward creation of an atmosphere that is conducive to treatment.

Performs client care monitoring in accordance with the quality assurance plan for the security department at this facility.

Reviews reports made by subordinate officers involving clients and therapeutic activities.

Makes on-site visits during ward rounds in which clients, client-employee interaction and the environment are visually inspected.

Completes performance planning evaluations and identifies educational programs which will enhance subordinates' abilities on the job.

Provides on-the-job training or assigns individuals to appropriate educational programs as needed.

Documents employee problems and refers to Corrections Major--Therapeutic for consultation and action, if indicated.

Counsels with subordinate employees under his/her immediate supervision and assists the Corrections Lieutenant--Therapeutic with counseling of his/her subordinates.

Coordinates work with on-coming shift by providing a brief report to assure continuity of patient care and uninterrupted integrity of security.

Participates in educational programs (either in-house or outside facility) as assigned, to increase knowledge base and job skills.

Incumbents are subject to twenty-four hour call.

Performs related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Three years of experience in a forensic, mental, correctional, or penal institution with responsibility for one of the following: security, custody, clinical care or rehabilitation of offenders.
 
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must have attained eighteenth birthday at time of application.
 
An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.
 
NOTE: A forensic institution is defined as a 24-hour secure facility providing treatment to judicially remanded clients.
