FUNCTION OF WORK:
To fabricate, manufacture, and repair metal parts using various types of machine tools and shop equipment.

LEVEL OF WORK:
Experienced

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
General supervision is received from a Machinist Foreman, Machinist Master, or agency official of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
None.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from apprentice and similar jobs by its performance of journeyman level machining work.

Differs from master and foreman jobs by its lack of the required supervisory responsibility.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Operates lathes, milling machines, shapers, drill presses, welding equipment, and other equipment located in a machine shop working to tolerances of .001 inch.

Fabricates or repairs metal parts from stock for a variety of equipment and machines such as boilers, bridges, pumps, washing machines, ironing machines, food preparation equipment, internal combustion engines, steam engines, etc.

Fabricates or repairs metal parts for plant or production machinery.

Makes various types of parts such as bearings, bushings, shafts, gears, rods, etc.

Reads and interprets blueprints and mechanical schematic drawings to fabricate parts.

Adjusts, dismantles, and assembles machines and machine parts.

Directs and trains assigned helpers and apprentices.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of experience or training in the machinist trade; OR

Completion of the Industrial Machine Shop program at a State technical institute or equivalent program.
