FUNCTION OF WORK:
To accomplish tasks in various blood therapies, component preparation, screening of donors, and using phlebotomy techniques.

Close from laboratory personnel of higher level.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Phlebotomist 2 by the presence of entry level tasks performed under close supervision.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Determines eligibility for donors to give whole blood or blood, completes donor questionnaires, recognizes and interpreting vital signs, and performs routine testing.

Prepares donors for sterile vein puncture in keeping with standard protocol.

Performs venipunctures and phlebotomies, observes donors for possible reactions, and reports observations to a physician or other professional medical personnel.

Fractionates blood and prepares various blood components from whole blood and blood component donations.

Studies techniques for blood component donations and studies procedures to prepare supplies and equipment used in various blood bank procedures.

Receives instructions to rejuvenate red cells and freezes and thaws components by specialized techniques to preserve their volubility for patient transfusion.

Issues blood components to hospital personnel.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
One year of experience or training in nursing, phlebotomy, or as a medical lab assistant, medical lab technician, or in medical research that included drawing blood from patients; OR

Certification or eligibility for certification as a Phlebotomist by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners; OR

Six semester hours earned from an accredited college or university in a biological science or chemical science field, or nursing.
