FUNCTION OF WORK:
To serve as a member of an autonomous forestry crew and as such provide specialized assistance to forest management and protection personnel.

LEVEL OF WORK:
Experienced

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Functional from Forestry Crew Specialist Leaders and Forestry Parish Assistants and general from Forestry Crew Supervisors or Forestry Parish Supervisors.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
None.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Forest Crew Specialist 1 by responsibility for performing more specialized non-professional forest management and fire suppression tasks.

Differs from Forestry Crew Specialist Leader by the absence of lead worker responsibilities.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Function occasionally as forestry crew leader during his absence.

Serve as a member of a forestry crew, fights forest fires, and serves on call-out 24 hours per day during fire season or other critical periods as needed.

Operates a crawler tractor with a fire plow and/or blade and two ton or larger trucks.

Participate in forest management activities such as: plowing fire lines, prescribing burns, painting land lines, and inspecting timber for disease or damage and marking it as needed.

Collects cone and tree seed plants and picks up and delivers seedlings.

Maintain fire towers and sites, which may include painting, performing minor plumbing and electrical repairs and repairing and/or constructing standby cabins and other buildings and facilities.

Services fire fighting equipment by changing oil, greasing, washing, waxing and performing minor repairs to vehicles.

Operate fire observation towers as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent plus six months of experience in forest management or forest conservation; OR

Three semester hours in forestry, horticulture or botany; OR

Completion of a forest technology program of at least eighteen months duration from a technical college.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Possession of a current Louisiana driver's license.
