FUNCTION OF WORK:
To serve as lead worker of an autonomous crew and as such provides assistance in forestry management and protection functions to forestry personnel.

LEVEL OF WORK:
Advanced

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Direct from Forestry Crew Supervisor or Forestry Parish Supervisor and functional from Forestry Parish Assistant.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Functional supervision over Forestry Crew Specialists 1 and 2.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Forestry Crew Specialist 1 and 2 by presence of lead worker responsibilities.

Differs from Forestry Crew Specialist Leader-Heavy by the absence of responsibility for transporting and operating heavy dozers (John Deere 750 equivalent or larger) and wildland fire engines during wildfire suppression and forest management activities.

Differs from Forestry Parish Assistant by the absence of assisting a parish supervisor in forest management and protection activities.

Differs from Forestry Crew Supervisor by the absence of direct supervision.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Oversees, trains, and participates with a crew of one or more forestry crew personnel.

Serve as fire boss during fires.

Ensure that the fire crew, equipment and tower are ready for use at all times through inspections and participation in maintenance activities.

Performs duties associated with fire observation towers or fire fighter functions.

Fights forest fires and writes reports on equipment use, maintenance and attendance during fire suppression activities.
Available for on-call duty twenty-four hours per day during fire season or as directed during other critical periods.

Participate in forestry management activities, such as plowing fire lines, controlling burns, painting land lines, inspecting timber for disease or damage and marking timber as needed.

Collects forestry seeds and plants and picks up and delivers seedlings.

Maintain fire towers and sites, which may include painting, performing minor plumbing and electrical repairs, repairing and/or constructing standby cabins and other buildings and facilities.

Services fire fighting equipment by changing oil, greasing, washing, waxing and performing minor repairs to vehicles.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent plus one year of experience in forest management or forest conservation; OR

Six semester hours in forestry, horticulture or botany; OR

Completion of a forest technology program of at least eighteen months duration from a technical college.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Possession of a current Louisiana driver's license.
