FUNCTION OF WORK:To assist in designing, planning, and overseeing horticultural and landscaping projects and/or to assist in the supervision of the operation and activities of a greenhouse.
LEVEL OF WORK:SUPERVISION RECEIVED:General from Horticulturist Manager, unclassified manager, or other higher level personnel.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:Line over employees of a lower level and/or residents.
JOB DISTINCTIONS:Differs from Horticulturist Manager by lack of responsibility for second line supervision, departmental management, and horticultural consultant duties.

Assigns and oversees the work of subordinate employees, inmates, or of residents involved in a vocational or occupational training program (may oversee the work of contractors); instructs employees, inmates, or residents in proper horticultural procedures or techniques.
Assists in writing specifications for equipment, tools, plants, bids, or new plantings; orders or purchases equipment supplies, plants, materials, and repairs.
Maintains safety records of pesticides and chemical use and updates the safety manual.
Attends grounds meetings and horticultural seminars.
Assist in designing, planning, and overseeing preparation of new and existing beds or landscapes, capes, schedules plantings, and the application of fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides; grows ornamental plants, flowers for cut arrangements, vegetables and pot plants in a garden or greenhouse.
Collaborates and consults with state officials concerning desired results of horticultural or landscaping projects or with other horticultural professionals concerning problems or to share information.
Manages greenhouse and nursery activities.
May provide classroom assistance in a University setting.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a current Horticulture License issued by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry plus three years of experience in horticulture, floriculture, agronomy, landscape architecture, or in the general care of crops, shrubs or plants; OR
A bachelor's degree in a plant science or landscape field of study.
