FUNCTION OF WORK:
To supervise one or more functions of a farming operation at a correctional facility or other non-research setting.

LEVEL OF WORK:
Supervisor

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
General from a Prison Enterprises Farm Manager or other higher-level employee.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Direct over subordinate staff and/or inmates.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Prison Enterprises Supervisors by the presence of responsibility for supervising a farming operation.

Differs from Prison Enterprises Farm Manager by the absence of responsibility for managing a farming operation at a corrections facility.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Supervises the daily operation and management of a cattle and vegetable or cash crop farm utilizing and instructing adult or juvenile inmate labor.

Plans land use and preparation, recommends the purchase of fertilizer, chemicals, seed, fencing material, fuel, livestock feed, etc.

Oversees and directs the feeding and care of livestock, planning of pastures, production of hay and silage, fencing of pastures, and cleaning of stalls and barns.

Oversees and directs the planting, cultivating and harvesting of vegetables, the operation of dangerous equipment, the maintenance and repair of equipment and buildings, and the use of hazardous chemicals and fertilizers.

Supervises inmates assigned to the LSP pumping station and flood control drainage facilities.

Supervises and inspects all maintenance operations associated with the LSP pumping facilities.

Oversees handling of all scrap metal operations at LSP.

Oversees heavy equipment operations assigned to Prison Enterprises operations at LSP by conducting safety meetings and training for inmates on the use of heavy farm equipment.

Supervises operations of portable sawmill operations.

Assists higher-level personnel by maintaining compliance with appropriate institutional and Prison Enterprises policies pursuant to ACA compliance in relation to tool/key control, safety meetings/training, and reports.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Three years of farming experience that involved the use of mechanized equipment; or experience in a correctional or penal institution with responsibility for the security, custody, rehabilitation or classification of offenders engaged in farming activities.

EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience for a maximum of four years.
