FUNCTION OF WORK:To plan and supervise the operations of a large cutterhead dredge and associated support equipment consisting of support barges, push boat, and anchor handling tug.
LEVEL OF WORK:SUPERVISION RECEIVED:Direct from an Engineer 5 or equivalent level supervisor. May receive supervision from higher.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:Direct over Marine Operator 3, Dredge Chief Engineer, and/or other personnel involved in dredge operations and maintenance.
JOB DISTINCTIONS:Differs from Engineer 5 in that only the dredge work unit is supervised.
Differs from Dredge Chief Engineer and Marine Operator 3 by the presence of supervision for all maintenance and operations of a large floating suction dredge, attendant tugs, and barges.

Plans operations, such as moving the dredge to new work locations.
Directs Sounding Boat in order to provide pre- and post-digging depths.
Oversees and is in direct charge of dredge when crews are working either normal or extended around the clock shifts.
Required to be on call 24 hours a day for all incidentals pertaining to the dredge and river conditions.
Inspects work in progress.
Assists in the planning, implementation, and inspection of all drydocking and contractor related repairs to Dredge and associated equipment.
Provides direction and assistance in the location of sunken debris and lost cargo in river.
Maintains inventory and reorders spare parts for Dredge and other support equipment.
Prepares production reports, requisitions, purchase orders, and dredging charges to wharves.
Checks dredging permits and maintains current United States Coast Guard Certificates of Documentation on all towing vessels used for dredging operations.
May tow dredge, dredge supply barge, floating pontoon dredge discharge pipelines, piledriving barge, cargo barges, and other floating equipment.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Four years of experience as an operator, mate, or engineer in the operation of a dredge plus one of the following:
1. Possession of a United States Coast Guard license as a Master of Towing Vessels for the operation of an uninspected towing vessel of not more than 100 gross registered tons upon inland waters of the United States plus possession of certification as a Designated Examiner by the United States Coast Guard for use in completing TOARS (Towing Officers Assessment Record).
2. Possession of a United States Coast Guard Engineer's license with a minimum requirement of authority as a Designated Duty Engineer.
