FUNCTION OF WORK:
To provide services; as well as to supply, process, maintain, and distribute medical supplies and equipment throughout state health care facilities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Close from a higher level central service worker or unit manager, such as a Registered Nurse or Practical Nurses--Licensed.

None.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Central Service Worker 2 by the absence of journeyman level duties.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Picks up used instruments, equipment, and trays from all nursing units.

Prepares packs of supplies, instruments, dressings, and treatment trays; wraps and seals packs according to established standards.

Picks up requisitions for supply and issue.

Distributes supplies, equipment, and trays to nursing areas throughout the hospital.

Cleans (scrubs and washes) surgical instruments, containers, and equipment.

Reports missing and breakage of instruments.

Stocks shelves, pulls medical supplies, and issues equipment.

Polices area for neatness and inadequacies; reports problems to supervisor.

Keeps area clean and free of debris.

Performs any other jobs assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Assists with inventories.

Sterilizes instruments, equipment, supplies, surgical linens, surgical packs, and treatment trays using autoclave, sterilizer, and/or antiseptic solutions.

Operates specialized sterilization equipment and machines, e.g., steam autoclave, washer/decontaminator, or gas (ETO) sterilizer.

Receives instruction and training in regulations regarding infectious control and specialized cleaning chemicals.

Work may involve shift work.

Attends mandatory in-service training.

Delivers requests to nursing units and/or ancillary departments.

Codes and keys patients charges for rental equipment and supply charges.

No experience or training is required.
