FUNCTION OF WORK:
To perform routine patient care and support under the oversight of licensed nursing staff.

LEVEL OF WORK:
Advanced

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
General from a Nursing Assistant Supervisor 1, Nursing Assistant Supervisor 2, Registered Nurse or other higher-level personnel.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
May provide guidance to lower-level nursing personnel.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Nursing Assistant 1 by the presence of responsibility for advanced nursing assistant duties.

Differs from Nursing Assistant Supervisor 1 by the absence of direct supervisory responsibility.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
EXAMPLES BELOW ARE A BRIEF SAMPLE OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED.

Performs the full range of nursing assistant duties in direct and indirect patient care, transportation, and maintenance of a resident/patient care area by performing tasks such as assisting with daily living activities, taking vital signs, assisting with treatments, performing non-invasive lab procedures, etc.

Observes patients physical and mental conditions; reports any changes to the assigned supervisor.

Prepares and/or inspects ward rooms, equipment, supplies and area for cleanliness; reports deficiencies or maintenance problems.

Accompanies residents to physician visits, clinic appointments, and other outside facility activities.

Performs routine lab work such as High/Hct and urine dipstick; documents results on client records and lab logs.

Successfully completes training programs such as for CPR, First Aid, infection control, infectious disease, quality control, safety, and JCAHO requirements.

Assists with various examinations and treatments by positioning patients, preparing supplies, and maintaining cleanliness of the treatment area.

Performs routine treatments/procedures under the supervision of a licensed nurse such as changing dressings, irrigating colostomies, tube feeding, and nasopharyngeal suctioning, etc. as allowed by institution policy.

Takes measurements and documents results of tests as applicable to the area of responsibility such as visual acuity, muscle/balance, color-vision performance, hearing, CLIA-waived lab tests, etc.

Instructs and trains lower-level staff in patient care techniques; may serve as a lead worker over nursing unit aides and nursing assistants.

Assesses inventory; orders and distributes supplies.

Demonstrates proper use of medical equipment and supplies for patients; provides written instructions for home use.

Assists in preparing patients for surgery by providing gowns, wristbands, etc. and asking preliminary questions.

Cleans sensitive medical equipment as needed by following required specifications.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of experience in patient care; OR

Possession of a current Certified Nursing Assistant certificate or graduation from an Emergency Medical Technician Program plus one year and six months of experience in patient care; OR

Completion of an accredited registered or practical nursing program.

NOTE:
Positions at facilities receiving certain Medicaid or Medicare funds require that applicants possess a current Certified Nursing Assistant certificate.
