FUNCTION OF WORK:To perform specialized paraprofessional nursing duties in the application of aseptic and sterile techniques for treatment of patients in various specialty areas.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:JOB DISTINCTIONS:Differs from Nursing Assistants by the presence of responsibility for performing specialized procedures in the care of patients in various specialty areas (i.e. orthopedic, urology, ophthalmology, speech pathology/audiology, endoscopy, telemetry, burn, psychiatric, emergency care).
Differs from Medical Assistants by the absence of responsibility for performing office management and clerical support duties.

Performs specialized procedures in various specialty areas (i.e. orthopedic, urology, ophthalmology, speech pathology/audiology, endoscopy, telemetry, burn, psychiatric, emergency care).
Performs minor, specific diagnostic tests utilizing appropriate equipment and procedures (i.e. applying and removing casts, applying dressings to wounds, performing hearing screenings, placing telemetry equipment and leads on patients, placing EEG equipment and leads on patients, assisting with hydrotherapy treatment, inserting and removing catheters, etc.).
Receives, transports, and prepares patient for examination by physician.
Prepares room and equipment for examinations. Cleans room/equipment and properly stores equipment after examinations. Maintains and monitors equipment to determine if properly functioning.
Assists physician during examination and/or specialty procedure. Observes patients on monitors.
Records, charts, graphs, and displays data relative to patients' performance/condition.
Assists with obtaining information for the initial patient assessment (i.e. vital signs, weight, pulse oximetry, current medication and allergies, etc.).
Ensures upkeep of patient files.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of experience or training in patient care or medical records.
