FUNCTION OF WORK:
To perform routine laboratory duties.

LEVEL OF WORK:
Advanced

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
General from higher level laboratory or medical personnel.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
May serve as a leadworker over lower level laboratory personnel.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Laboratory Technical Assistant 2 by the presence of advanced level and/or leadworker duties. Differs from Laboratory Technician 1 by the absence of technical skills.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
EXAMPLES BELOW ARE A BRIEF SAMPLE OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED.

Assists with the centrifugation of blood specimens to obtain serum or plasma as required for laboratory analysis utilizing appropriate balancing techniques.

Assists with the preparation and/or staining of slides for microscopic review.

Transports specimens to appropriate testing or storage areas.

Participates in the training of new and/or lower level employees and students.

IN AN ANIMAL LABORATORY

Collects laboratory samples; blood, feces, urine, saliva, and bacteriological swabs.

Cleans animal cages, disposes of refuse materials and washes down floors and walls of animal rooms.

Administers, upon direction, medications orally, subcutaneously, I.M., and nasogastric intubation.

Observes animals and reports signs of sickness or unusual behavior to supervisor.

Assist higher level laboratory personnel with the care of pre-operative and post-operative animals.

Prepares special diets and feeds them to designated animals.

Maintains records for animal identification.

Removes dead animals from cages and disposes dead animals as directed.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of experience as a phlebotomist, EKG/ECG technician, pulmonary technician, or respiratory care technician, or in the care, preparation or handling of laboratory specimens, animals, or cadavers; OR

An associate's degree in medical technology, nursing, clinical laboratory science, or a biological, physical, or chemical science; OR

Certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science.

EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every six semester hours earned from an accredited college or university in any of the biological, physical, chemical, or agricultural sciences will substitute for one year of the required experience.
